Road Safety Improvement Works for the Great Lakes

Last modified: November 3, 2009 - 1:38 PM

Great Lakes Council have recently commenced work on two road projects to be completed under the Federal Government's Auslink Blackspot Programme and Nation Building Programme, with a third project planned for 2010.

The first project is located south of Bungwahl near Mayers Flat and involves upgrading of a 1.1km length of the Lakes Way. Funding under the Auslink Blackspot Programme of $623,200 has been provided for this work.

Works involve widening and improvement of the road alignment, upgrading of drainage, placement of an asphalt surfacing and installation of guardrail.  Initial works on this site involve installation of drainage and completion of earthworks for the designed alignment changes.

The project has been designed to improve the safety of the road at this location. Works are due to be completed by the end of the year.

The second project involves the installation of a roundabout at the intersection of South and Bent Streets in Tuncurry. Installation of the roundabout will improve the safety of motorists at this intersection. Funding under the Nation Building Programme of $180,000 has been provided for this work.

"This intersection has the highest number of accidents in the Great Lakes and the roundabout will substantially improve this statistic" said Wade Holmes, Council's Traffic Engineer.

Whilst works occur traffic along Bent Street will be detoured around the intersection via adjacent streets. Traffic control will also be in place on a daily basis controlling the flow of traffic through the intersection.  Works are due to be completed by December 2009.

A third project, which is also funded under the Blackspot Programme, will commence early in 2010.  This project is located at the very southern end of The Lakes Way and involves the upgrading and realignment of 1km of road on Koolonock Range.  Funding of $1 million has been provided under the Blackspot Programme for this work.

"These two projects on The Lakes Way will dramatically improve road safety and access from the south for communities surrounding Smiths and Wallis Lakes to Forster Tuncurry" said Mr Ron Hartley, Council's Director of Engineering Services.

"Motorists are urged to take caution when driving through these roadworks sites and to abide by roadwork speed limits that are in place" said Council's Operations Manager, Mr Robert Fish.

To minimise delays whilst the two projects are undertaken on The Lakes Way, motorists are requested to consider the alternative route to Forster along the Pacific Highway where possible. Signage will be erected on The Lakes Way and Pacific Highway advising motorists of the alternative route.
