Local Government Week - Explore your own back yard

Richard Old, Manager of Great Lakes Tourism has one message for local residents for this year’s Local Government Week:  “You live in one of the most beautiful regions of Australia, so why not get out and explore it?”

The message from Great Lakes Tourism is that the Visitor Information Centres are there for local people as well as our many visitors.   “The Great Lakes Tourism team has extensive knowledge of the local area, and beyond. We are here to not only service visitors but also the local community and ensure that the region continues to grow and prosper” said Richard Old, “there are many ways that our friendly staff at the Centres may be able to assist you”.

For starters, each Visitor Centre has an extensive collection of maps, guides, brochures and information relating to great things to see and do in the Great Lakes region and beyond.  Before you venture out, drop in to a Centre and you might be surprised what’s on offer in our local region.

Each Centre also has a great range of “Great Lakes” branded souvenirs.  These could be a great gift for your next visitor and provide them with a memory of our region. Speaking of visitors, Great Lakes Tourism can help you find accommodation and get you the best deal for visiting friends and family.

“Local people may not be aware that the Visitor Information Centre can also assist with a range of other services, such as providing events management assistance and advice” said Richard Old. “We have over 20 years event management experience and access to extensive resources, databases and networks that can make even the seemingly hardest event a little easier”.

“We can include any event that you’re planning on our Events Calendar, which will help get the message around the region and further.  The Events Calendar is sent out as a quarterly newsletter and it’s also available online at www.greatlakes.org.au”.

“Another way we can help with events management is by providing marketing advice and assistance” added Richard Old.  “Great Lakes Tourism (GLT) is marketing the region through a variety of mediums constantly and may be able to help with accessing publications, getting media interviews or creating partnerships to defray costs”.

The GLT will help if you’re planning a local Conference and can assist with venue searches, accommodation packages, catering and activities. S

taff at the Centres can help you find a local business for any job.

We can also help with accommodation, activities and tours. People can also access the community for publicity, notices, surveys and collection and drop off points through the Visitor Information Centres.  They are located in Forster, Bulahdelah, Pacific Palms and Tea Gardens.

Further information can be obtained from the Great Lakes website at www.greatlakes.org.au or via email to tourism@greatlakes.nsw.gov.au .  The freecall number for Great Lakes Tourism is 1800 802 692.
