Local Government week - Waste Management Services

Great Lakes Council’s Waste Management Program is providing the residents of the Great Lakes area with efficient and reliable services which are in response to community needs and expectations, while remaining sensitive to environmental issues.   For more information see Council’s website www.greatlakes.nsw.gov.au and follow the links ”Our Environment” to “Waste & Recycling”.

What’s New in Waste?

TAngler Bins!

Council has installed TAngler bins at popular fishing spots across Forster/Tuncurry. These bins are for disused fishing line, hooks and bait bags to help protect the environment and wildlife. The bins are secured to posts which exhibit artwork by local artist Russel Pacey, and display many of the natural fauna found in this area.

Stockland Waste Audit

Waste Services provided assistance to Stockland when they recently conducted a waste audit of their premises. Council provided signage for the food court along with information to retailers about the methods of correct recycling.

What’s happening at the Landfill?

Council is constantly improving the way we manage the waste that comes to the landfill. Some examples are:

·       Mattresses are stripped, the steel frame is recovered and recycled.

·       Concrete is crushed and made into a reusable material eg. road base

·       Old gas bottles & scrap metal are recycled

·       Batteries and oil are recycled

·       Tyres are reprocessed and reused in various projects

·       Green waste is reprocessed into mulch which is used in Council improvement projects

·       Tip shops are still popular with the sale of reusable items

Greenhouse Gas Audits of Landfills

Council has just secured grant funding to conduct greenhouse gas audits at all four of Council’s landfills. The audits will identify the level of greenhouse gas emissions the landfills produce and recommend options to reduce or offset these emissions. The information gained from the audits will feed into a strategy that is being developed by Council. This strategy marks the first step of Council’s Waste Management Program to move towards becoming carbon neutral, by making changes to operations, or through greenhouse gas emission offsets.
