Stormwater/Flood Management

Council is responsible for the stormwater system and rivers (eg. Karuah and Coolongolook) which drain the Great Lakes area. This system collects stormwater from public and private property and carries it through kilometres of pipes to stormwater outlets in Wallis Lake, Burgess Beach, Smiths Lake, and Myall Lakes. However Council's stormwater responsibilities do not extend to private property. As such property owners are reminded to ensure all stormwater drainage systems from their property are maintained in good working order to prevent flooding and damage to their own property or any downstream properties.

Stormwater drainage is important for minimising the build up of water on low lying areas during flood periods as well as allowing access to areas which would otherwise be covered with water. In general a properly designed stormwater system will minimise the risk of pollution to local waterways.

For all stormwater and flooding enquires please contact Councils Drainage Engineer on 02 6591 7273.
