Towards a Sustainable Great Lakes

Have you thought about what the Great Lakes might be like in 20 years?

What condition will we leave the area in for our children and grandchildren?

Council’s “Towards a Sustainable Great Lakes” program is about creating a future for the region and ensuring it meets the needs of the current and next generations.

To achieve this, Council aims to identify and protect the community’s key values which reflect our lifestyle and cultural activities.

The initiative calls on all sectors of the community to work together to develop and deliver this vision for a place we are proud to be a part of.

Council recognises it has a lead role in ensuring this vision and values are well managed and protected through effective planning and on ground action.

Over the next 12 months you (the community) will have the opportunity to create a future for the Great Lakes through several avenues to be announced later in 2009.

Your input will form the Great Lakes Community Strategic Plan which will then be supported by more detailed Council plans to ensure the achievement of key long term goals and actions.

In the meantime Council has initiated several projects to progress sustainability within the organisation.

These initiatives include:

§          Forming a Sustainability Advisory Committee to oversee sustainability projects.

§          Developing and adopting a Sustainability Strategy containing an action plan to deliver sustainability results.

§          Undertaking energy and water saving initiatives to save money and reduce resource use.

§          Securing funding valued at $1.16 million to implement an Urban Sustainability Program.

§          Conducting an audit of the organisations sustainability using the Department of Environment and Climate Change’s (DECC) Sustainability Health Check tool.

§          Joining DECC’s Sustainability Advantage program to improve the environmental sustainability of the organisations business activities.

§          Working with the community to plan for the future.

§          Partnering with the community (business, students and residents to name a few) to support sustainable living practices.

The local community (schools, residents, businesses) have also embraced sustainability, realising the benefits of taking action to be sustainable.  You can read about these initiatives by following the links on the Sustainable Communities page.
