Emergency Services

Rural Fire Service and Emergency Services

Purpose

To protect life and assets through the provision of services which prevent and mitigate the occurrence of fires and other emergencies. (Assets include but not restricted to economic, social, environmental and heritage values found on both public and private lands).

Objectives
  1. Council shall provide financial support and resourcing requirements, as necessary, to enable the Rural Fire Service to effectively perform their responsibilities in accordance with the negotiated service level agreement.
  2. Council shall provide financial support and resourcing requirements, as necessary, to enable the State Emergency Service to effectively perform their responsibilities in our local government area.
  3. Council shall continue to evaluate and review the Disaster Management Plan for our local government area, in collaboration with the relevant agencies through the Local Emergency Management Committee, annually and where necessary.
As a result of negotiations regarding the service level agreement between the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Council all operational responsibility was transferred to the Rural Fire Service. State Emergency Services (SES) and Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) continue to operate closely with Council to ensure the impact of emergencies and motor vehicle accidents is reduced.

Each financial year will see a continuation of Council's support of the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service initiatives in our local government area. For example, substantial effort has been made to improve communication within the RFS with the implementation of a new paging system across the Local Government area.

These organisations are responsible for the day to day running of their respective services. However, Council will continue to provide financial support and resourcing requirements, as necessary, to enable these services to effectively perform their responsibilities in our local government area.

The Disaster Plan (DISPLAN) is in the final stages of its review and will be an up to date operational plan by the end of this year.
