Concessions For Pensioners

The Local Government Act requires all Council's in NSW to provide a concession to eligible pensioners.
How Much is the ConcessionThe pension concession is fifty (50) percent of the combined rates and domestic waste charges up to a maximum of $250. The majority of ratepayers will automatically receive the concession and it will appear on the annual rate notice issued in July each year.
Who Are Eligible PensionersTo be deemed an eligible pensioner, ratepayers must meet the following criteria:
- The rated property must be your sole or principal place of abode.
- The pensioner must be the person or persons liable for the payment of rates in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Act (section 560).
- The ratepayer must be in receipt of the Pension Concession Card issued by either Centrelink or the Department of Veterans Affairs, or the Department Of Veterans Affairs Gold TPI or EDA Card.
What Happens if I Become an Eligible Pensioner After the Rates are IssuedAs previously stated, the maximum concession granted to eligible pensioners is $250 per year. However, if you become an eligible pensioner after the rates are levied you may still be entitled to a partial concession.
If you become an eligible pensioner after the rates are issued in July, you will be entitled to a concession commencing from the start of the next quarterly period.
The concession will be $62.50 for each quarter they are eligible.
1st Quarter Rate Notice Issue Date to 30 September
2nd Quarter 1 October to 31 December
3rd Quarter 1 January to 31 March
4th Quarter 1 April to 30 June
How Do I Claim a ConcessionIf you have not already received a concession, you can apply by downloading the application form from the PDF file below and complete and send to Council. If the application is mailed to Council, a photocopy of your concession card should be attached.
